Ever since I have been in high school, there has always been something that has been difficult to me and that I would have to adjust to. Freshman year it was the adjustment to high school. Sophomore year it was balancing varsity sports with school; and last year, the difficulty was trying not to lose my mind at the end of the year because of how hard junior year was. Now that I’m a senior, college application deadlines are appearing closer and closer, but along with all of these difficulties I have faced over the past four years there has always been one I have not been able to conquer. It is the ability to get a job.
I mean it’s not like I haven’t tried. I have been applying for jobs all over my hometown of Hockessin and even in the Wilmington suburbs, but to no avail I have never been hired. My parents are always telling me too how I need a job, not for the money, but for the much needed experience for the future and to prove that I am responsible enough to handle having a job and dealing with school at the same time. This will prepare me for college because I plan on having a part-time job while I am studying.
The thing is though, that I do everything people have told me regarding applying for a job. I go to the place I am applying to and ask for an application, fill it out, then hand it in to whoever is working at that time. Then a few days later I go to visit again and ask if any spots have opened up so it seems like I am really interested and dedicated. I do this process for three weeks and every time I never hear back from them. This deeply irritates me because I have done this process of asking people probably fifty times and by now as people would imagine I am fed up with it.
So as a message to all of my viewers, what have you all done to get the jobs you have or have had? Comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)
Apply to the places your friends work. I got my job soley because my really good friend works there and she told them good things about me! Thats all the advice I have, goodluck!
ReplyDeleteLindsay has a good point that it can sometimes be really helpful to have a friend at a place where you'd like to apply for a job... but other times managers try to avoid this because they think it will be a distraction.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you've just been having some bad luck, because you're doing all of the right things.
You should go ahead and do the online application for Panera if you really want a job, because they're pretty much always hiring.
I highly recommend the "who do you know" strategy above. I got my first job because I had been a babysitter for the family, and then I worked for them in their small business. They have become lifelong friends-bonus! Also, think about where you would WANT to work. I always went for small companies, where I could talk to an owner or at least someone in charge. Then they really knew who I was when I kept checking back in. I can persuade anybody of anything in person. I learned that I had this talent applying for part time jobs.
