We're Back

Yesterday was a momentous event in Saint Marks High School history. It was the first time ever that the Spartan football program had beaten Salesianum twice in one season; in fact it was the first time that any team had beaten Sallies twice... ever. This makes it that much better especially for those of us who are a member of the team.

This also means one other thing. That we have a chance for another run at the DIAA State Championship. We all remember what happened last year, which was quite depressing, but I feel that this year will be different, especially since the team that beat us last year is not in the tournament anymore.

All the team has to do though is come out strong; play a full four quarters of football; and do what we have been doing for twelve games this season, which is control the line of scrimmage and run the football. After this has been done and our captains are holding the trophy above their heads, we can finally say after three years of waiting that we are officially the best team in the state of Delaware.

This championship would mean so much for everyone because it has been thirty-two years since the last Saint Marks football team won the State Championship in 1978. So everyone should come and support us, we play next Saturday, December 4. Kickoff is at 2:00, so be there and show your support.

Job Dilemma

Ever since I have been in high school, there has always been something that has been difficult to me and that I would have to adjust to. Freshman year it was the adjustment to high school. Sophomore year it was balancing varsity sports with school; and last year, the difficulty was trying not to lose my mind at the end of the year because of how hard junior year was. Now that I’m a senior, college application deadlines are appearing closer and closer, but along with all of these difficulties I have faced over the past four years there has always been one I have not been able to conquer. It is the ability to get a job.

I mean it’s not like I haven’t tried. I have been applying for jobs all over my hometown of Hockessin and even in the Wilmington suburbs, but to no avail I have never been hired. My parents are always telling me too how I need a job, not for the money, but for the much needed experience for the future and to prove that I am responsible enough to handle having a job and dealing with school at the same time. This will prepare me for college because I plan on having a part-time job while I am studying.

The thing is though, that I do everything people have told me regarding applying for a job. I go to the place I am applying to and ask for an application, fill it out, then hand it in to whoever is working at that time. Then a few days later I go to visit again and ask if any spots have opened up so it seems like I am really interested and dedicated. I do this process for three weeks and every time I never hear back from them. This deeply irritates me because I have done this process of asking people probably fifty times and by now as people would imagine I am fed up with it.

So as a message to all of my viewers, what have you all done to get the jobs you have or have had? Comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

Senior Superlative Stress

Senior year is flying by. The Welcome Dance has passed and our last Spirit Week has gone by; but with the ending of these events comes something new, something totally different. That something is Senior Superlatives. Senior Superlatives are when all of the seniors vote for students who represent different topics of interest: friendliest, best all around, most dramatic, etc.

During this time, most students hope to win a senior superlative, but because there are many students it is not really easy to win. So in order for someone to win a senior superlative, they go around suggesting to people what they want to be voted for, or they go around telling people to vote for them, or they just write their name on someone’s paper. This, in my opinion, is extremely annoying.

The reasons I am annoyed by this are: one, some people want to be picked for a topic that doesn’t suit them; two, some students take it as a joke and put down people who don’t match the categories; and three, they keep asking you to write them down, even though you probably won’t put them down for that certain category. Then, after the fact that I already said I might vote for them, they tell me reasons why I should vote for them. It drives me crazy when people do this, so in the end, they probably won’t be getting my vote. Oh well, too bad for them.

However, even though this is kind of stressful, by the time they officially elect who won each category every student is going to be interested in who won; even though some students have already been predicted to win some topics, and probably will. 

My Unique Contribution(s).

Our World Literature class is full of many characters, who demonstrate many distinct attributes; but in reference to myself, I am not entirely sure what I bring to the class. 

When I think about my contributions to the class, a few ideas pop into my mind. First off, I believe that I bring some humor to our class by making rib-tickling comments about some of our classmates... Mark Andrew Burgess (cough, cough). This humor leads the class to go in one of two directions: it either leads into a discussion led by Mrs Healey, or it accomplishes nothing and leads to more comments by some of my classmates. This last one is the most typical.

My randomness too brings something to our class. From this randomness, I emit answers to various questions from Mrs. Healey, even though I have no reasoning for why I gave that answer. This then emits responses from others in the class proving that my answer was correct. On the other hand, I also can be called a follower. Not the way most people view it though; in a way I believe my following can be used as a way to backup another classmates answer. I also can be a suck-up but just because I agree with the teacher doesn’t mean I’m sucking up Mark.

These are all essential to who I am during our forty-one minutes of our World Literature class, but this is only my opinion of myself. So, in order to understand who I am not only can you trust my opinion but the opinions of others about myself. Now I shall end my first post with the hope of people commenting and showing what they think of what I bring to the class.
